How to Install a Metal-Fab Temp/Guard Pitched Cathedral Ceiling Kit?

Installing your chimney correctly is essential for safety, efficiency, and long-term reliability. The Metal-Fab Temp/Guard Pitched Cathedral Ceiling Kit is also available in 6-inches, 7-inches and 8-inches. Follow these steps to ensure a secure installation:

1. Determine the Correct Flue Diameter and Chimney Location: Start by consulting the appliance manufacturer’s instructions to identify the appropriate flue diameter and chimney location. This ensures optimal performance and safety.
2. Frame the Opening: Use framing lumber that matches the ceiling joist size to create the opening. For framing that is perpendicular to the roof joists, make sure it's mounted vertically to provide the necessary support.
3. Insert the Roof Support: Place the Roof Support into the framed opening so it extends at least three inches below the finished ceiling on the lower side. This provides proper support and stability.
4. Mark and Trim the Roof Support: Once the Roof Support is in place, mark the slope of the roof on it. Remove it, trim the excess metal, and reinsert it securely.
5. Secure the Roof Support: Use a minimum of four 1” roofing nails per side to fasten the Roof Support securely in its position. This ensures the chimney remains stable over time.
6. Attach the First Chimney Section: The Roof Support has a built-in starter collar designed for the TG chimney. Attach the first section of the pipe firmly to the Roof Support.
7. Extend the Chimney to the Roof: Continue assembling the chimney sections up to the roof. Cut a roof opening centered over the chimney, allowing for a 1-1/2 inch clearance for 6”-8” diameters and a 2-inch clearance for 10”-12” diameters as the chimney penetrates the roof. The hole size will vary based on the roof pitch.
8. Install the Next Chimney Section and Radiation Shield: Guide the next chimney section through the roof. For 12” chimneys, attach a radiation shield over the chimney. Temporarily bend the shield straps over the roof to hold it in place. Once the flashing is installed, secure the straps to the flashing.
9. Seal the Flashing: Apply a bead of caulk around the pipe at the top edge of the flashing. Wrap the storm collar around the pipe, embedding its edge in the caulk. This step is crucial for preventing any water leakage around the pipe.
10. Ensure Proper Chimney Height: If the horizontal distance from the chimney to the roof peak is 10 feet or less, make sure the chimney top is at least 2 feet above the roof peak and a minimum of 3 feet above the highest point where it passes through the roof.
