How to Install a Metal-Fab Temp/Guard Interior Kit?

Ensure your chimney is installed securely and effectively with these essential steps. The Metal-Fab Temp/Guard Interior Kit is also available in 6-inches, 7-inches and 8-inches. By following this guide, you’ll guarantee optimal performance and safety for your appliance:

1. Identify the Proper Flue Diameter and Chimney Location: Consult the appliance manufacturer’s instructions to determine the correct flue diameter and proper chimney placement. This step is crucial for maximizing efficiency and ensuring safety.
2. Frame the Ceiling Opening: Use framing lumber that matches the ceiling joist size to frame the ceiling opening. This creates a strong foundation for your chimney system.
3. Install the Ceiling Support: Insert the Ceiling Support from below until the flanged edges rest firmly against the ceiling drywall. Secure it in place using eight 8-penny nails. If the Ceiling Support was installed earlier and is now covered by drywall, use Metal-Fab’s ceiling support trim kit to achieve a clean, professional finish.
4. Connect the Appliance: Install either a single-wall or double-wall connector pipe between the appliance and the ceiling support. This provides a secure and efficient connection for your system.
5. Extend the Chimney into the Attic: Install the first chimney section through the joist area into the attic, ensuring it extends approximately two feet. If the attic pipes are not enclosed, use an insulation shield for added protection. Lower the insulation shield over the pipe until it rests on the joist, then secure it by nailing the flange to the joist. If the attic section is enclosed, the insulation shield is not required.
6. Extend the Chimney Through the Roof: Continue assembling the chimney to the roof. Cut a roof opening centered over the chimney, maintaining a 1-1/2 inch clearance for 6”-8” diameters and a 2-inch clearance for 10”-12” diameters. The size of the hole will vary depending on the roof pitch—refer to Table 1 for special 8TG clearances.
7. Install the Chimney Section Through the Roof: Guide the next chimney section through the roof. For 12” chimneys, place a radiation shield over the chimney section and temporarily secure the shield straps over the roof. Once you install the flashing, attach the straps securely to the flashing.
8. Seal the Flashing Properly: Apply a bead of caulk around the pipe at the top edge of the flashing. Wrap the storm collar around the pipe, embedding it in the caulk to create a watertight seal and prevent leakage.
9. Ensure Proper Chimney Height Above the Roof: If the horizontal distance from the chimney to the roof peak is 10 feet or less, the chimney must extend at least 2 feet above the peak. The overall height should never be less than 3 feet above the highest point where the chimney passes through the roof. This ensures proper drafting and compliance with safety standards.
