Do fireplace firebacks work? Yes! And here's how. Normally, a great deal of heat is lost up the chimney. The stonework also absorbs a lot of it and does a poor job of radiating it back into the room. In fact, sponging up all of that heat causes the mortar to dry out, increasing the risks of cracking. There's not much a fire back can do about heat being lost up the chimney. But it can protect the stonework by reflecting the heat away from the firebox walls and back into the room.

At the minimum, a gas log fireback for fireplaces should be the same size as the log grate and cover the back wall of the firebox directly behind the grate. And there should be a few inches of clearance along the sides of the firebox from the fireback. So for a 24 inch log set, the fireplace fireback would also need to be at least 24 inches.
