Can I install a fireplace door without a riser bar?

  • If the door you have obtained is not quite tall enough to fill the fireplace opening, a riser bar may be needed to fill that gap. (Certain fireplace door models actually require a riser bar to function properly.)
  • A door perfectly sized for your fireplace opening should not need a riser bar.

How do I replace the insulation for my fireplace doors?

What will you need?

  • Screwdriver
  • Work gloves
  • Fireplace self-adhesive insulation strips

There should be no fire burning in your fireplace and the doors room temperature. We recommend having an additional person to help out.

STEP 1: Loosen the lintel clamps holding the door frame while your assistant supports the frame so it doesn't suddenly fall to the floor.

STEP 2: Wear your gloves to protect your hands from the fiberglass splinters and pull away the old insulation stuck to the frame and/ or fireplace. If any sticky adhesive is left behind, scrape it off.

STEP 3: Apply the new, self-adhesive insulation around the frame.

STEP 4: Move the frame back into position with the lintel clamps and tighten the frame back over the fireplace opening. Screw the clamps until the insulation is pressed between the frame and the masonry of the fireplace.

What exactly does a suspension bar do?

  • With a raised firebox, a suspension bar helps to hold up an inside-fit enclosure.
  • The suspension bar also allows the enclosure to overlap all 4 sides of the firebox opening.

What is a mortar frame? Do I need one to install a fireplace door?

  • A mortar frame is used in newly built homes that include a masonry fireplace. The average mortar frame is usually 3/16 inches thick and approximately 4 1/2 inches wide. It has a double lip (one at the front of the frame and one at the back) which allows for easy installation of your fireplace glass doors. These masonry fireplace mortar frames are constructed from heavy-duty steel and designed for use with Stoll fireplace glass doors.
  • While many contractors resort to different methods of stabilizing the opening of the firebox during the construction of a masonry fireplace, the mortar frame provides the exact dimensions needed for the opening and allows your mason to construct a perfectly symmetrical arched or rectangular opening. Once your glass fireplace doors are ready to be installed, you simply insert the enclosure into the lip of the frame for a snug fit. We highly recommend obtaining this mortar frame prior to the establishment of your masonry fireplace to make the design and construction process go a lot smoother.
