A: No. If you have a masonry wood burning fireplace, you need ceramic glass doors to be able to safely close them. Tempered glass doors aren’t rated to handle the kind of heat that they would be exposed to and could shatter unexpectedly.
- If you have a prefabricated fireplace, you should never close your doors when a fire is burning! These fireplaces require a certain amount of ventilation and airflow to operate safely, and closing the doors could cause them to get too hot, damaging surrounding combustible materials and causing a fire hazard. Also, you would lose the majority of your heat and you could shatter the glass doors.

Q: What do I do if my glass breaks?

A: First, let’s look at what the glass is going to be installed in.
- If you have a wood stove, then you will definitely need ceramic glass, as it can handle that kind of heat, whereas tempered glass cannot.
- If you have a masonry fireplace, you will most likely want tempered glass, though ceramic glass doors may be an upgrade that you might want to look into. - If you have a prefabricated fireplace with broken glass doors that open, you will definitely want tempered glass, as these doors should always remain completely open when a fire is fully burning.
- If you have a Direct Vent fireplace, which has a fixed pane of glass at the front that cannot be opened, you could need either tempered or ceramic glass, depending on the BTU rating of the fireplace. For any heater-rated appliance with a BTU rating of 18,000 or higher, we recommend ceramic glass. If your appliance has a BTU rating of less than 18k, then tempered glass should be sufficient.
