How to Install a Metal-Fab Temp/Guard Exterior Kit?

If you're looking to install a chimney through a side wall, following these steps ensures a safe and efficient installation, while protecting your home. The Metal-Fab Temp/Guard Exterior Kit is also available in 6-inches, 7-inches and 8-inches. Here's how you can get it done effectively:

1. Identify and Prepare the Area: Choose the spot where your chimney will penetrate the vertical wall. Cut and frame an opening, making sure the flue is centered between the vertical wall studs for 6”, 7”, and 8” systems. For larger systems (10” and 12”), you might need to relocate wall studs to maintain a safe 2” clearance from combustible materials. Don’t forget—check with local authorities if structural changes are needed.
2. Install the Wall Firestop: From the outside, place the wall firestop into the framed opening. Push the remaining half through from the inside until the plate is flush, then secure it with four #10 x 2 ½” wood screws for a tight fit.
3. Attach the Wall Support Adaptor: Take the wall support adaptor from the Wall Support box and connect it to the bottom of the tee by inserting and rotating it to lock it securely.
4. Position the Tee: Insert the side tap of the tee into the opening in the wall firestop, ensuring a snug fit.
5. Assemble and Secure the Gusset: Use the hardware provided to attach the right and left gusset to the support plate, providing additional stability.
6. Fix the Wall Support Plate: Attach the wall support plate to the wall support adaptor using the four clamps provided but don’t tighten them yet.
7. Secure to Wall Studs: Align the wall support with the wall and fasten it to the wall studs using 5/16” x 2” lag screws (not provided). Remember—do not secure it to the siding.
8. Install the Tee Cap: Secure the tee cap to the bottom of the wall support adaptor with at least two #10 x ½” sheet metal screws.
9. Maintain Clearance and Tighten Clamps: Adjust the position of the tee and adaptor on the wall support to keep a 2” clearance from combustibles. Once aligned, tighten the clamps.
10. Install the Trim Sleeve Joint Cover: Slide a trim sleeve joint cover over the male end of the pipe that extends through the wall firestop and into the tee. Attach the single wall adapter to the female end of the pipe, then push the Trim Sleeve Joint Cover flush against the end of the single wall adapter.

Complete the Chimney Installation: Insert the Metal-Fab chimney pipe into the top of the tee, aligning the male and female ends. Push down and twist clockwise to lock the sections. Additional chimney sections can be added, extending up to a maximum of 60 feet. As you add sections, secure them to the outside wall using wall bands (TGWB) at eight-foot intervals and maintain a 2” clearance from combustibles. Fasten the bands to the chimney by tightening the clamping bolt and anchor them to the wall studs (not the siding) using 5/8” x 2” lag bolts.
