Earth’s Flame is a retrofit grate for open hearth fireplaces that can reduce emissions by up to 78%, increase fireplace draft by 76%, and reduce CO and smoke spillage by 60%. It has a wonderful combination of environmental and user benefits.

Why do you use a log lighter?
Our CSA certified Blue Flame log lighter is in the design to reduce emissions. 50% of all fireplace emissions occur during start of a fire. The log lighter starts the fire quickly and dramatically reduces those emissions. The log lighter also helps in some cases when the fire is re-stoked. The log lighter can also be used to preheat the chimney for fireplaces that do not draft very well initially.

What does the grate do in the design?
Primarily the grate creates a hotter burn of the wood by keeping an even and hot coal bed underneath the fire and the refractory panel above keeps heat down in the fire. The end result is a hotter burning fire. The hotter burning fire and the unique design is what generate the increase in radiant heat, the increase in draft, and the reduction in CO spillage.

Does the gas have to run continuously?
While the gas consumption of the log lighter is only 31 cents per hour some consumers might not want to leave it running during the fire. The log lighter is most valuable during the start of the fire. You can use the log lighter for ignition of the wood only and still get about 60% reductions in emissions.

Can I use Earth’s Flame without the log lighter?
Yes you can for those installations that either do not have natural gas, gas is not run to the fireplace, local codes do not allow a log lighters, or for those homeowners that aren’t comfortable with gas in their fireplace. You won’t get nearly the emissions reductions but you will get a radiant heat increase, increased draft, and a reduction in CO spillage. Once a fire is established the log lighter heat input is very small compared to the heat input from the wood being burned. It’s the hotter burn and the unique design of Earth’s Flame grate that generates the increased draft, the reduced CO spillage, and “throws” the radiant heat into the living space.
